Simple Terrarium Ideas for Kids

Do you know you can make your very own mini garden in glass jars, called terrarium? Terrarium Singapore is a great activity to do with children, where you can design your own landscape with simple materials that can be found anywhere!

Materials Needed

  • Large Glass Jar
  • Soil
  • Propagating Sand
  • Moss
  • Charcoal pieces
  • Small Pebbles
  • Plants (moss or succulents – moss might be easier to find
  • Rocks & Pebbles for decoration purposes
  • White Sand for decoration purposes
  • A Spoon
  • A few bowls to mix things in

Step 1: Always ensure that your glass is totally clean

Step 2: Place the pebbles in the bottom of the jar. The pebbles should be around 1.5cm deep.

Step 3: Rehydrate the sphagnum moss by soaking it in water. Remember to squeeze excess water from the moss. Place a very thin layer of moss on the pebbles.

The moss will act as a filter for your terrarium.

Step 4: Make the soil mixture. Take 2 handfuls of soil, one handful or sand and one tablespoon of charcoal. The charcoal acts as an agent to keep the soil fresh. The sand will help your plants to grow too.

Step 5: Create a thin layer of soil (around 2cm) after squeezing the excess water. Place the soil on top of the sphagnum moss in the terrarium.

Step 6: You can start to place the plants, moss and your decorative rocks into the soil.

Step 7:  Finally, decorate your terrarium with pebbles, rocks, and sand to finish your terrarium!
